UniAbuja Students Champion Safe Ride Initiative

Students of the Department of Development and Strategic Communication, University of Abuja, on Friday launched the “Safe Ride, Safe Life” Campaign, a road safety initiative aimed at promoting responsible driving practices among commercial tricycle (Keke) operators and raising awareness on accident prevention within the university community.
The campaign, organised by 100-Level students as part of the practical component of UA DCS 108: Development Communication Campaign, featured a campus-wide awareness walk across major roads, faculties, administrative buildings, and other strategic locations. Equipped with flyers, road safety stickers, placards carrying safety messages, and a public address system, the students sensitised members of the university community while mobilising support for a public lecture scheduled for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Convocation Ground.
The initiative focused on encouraging commercial tricycle operators to comply with traffic regulations, avoid speeding and overloading, ensure passengers are properly seated before moving, and maintain their vehicles regularly to reduce the risk of road crashes.
During the awareness walk, the students interacted with commercial tricycle operators, students, lecturers, non-teaching staff, and visitors, educating them on the importance of road safety. Interested members of the university community collected educational materials, while Keke riders received campaign stickers bearing the inscription “Safe Ride, Safe Life” as a symbol of their commitment to safer transportation.
Speaking during the exercise, the course lecturer, Auwal Sani, said the campaign demonstrated how classroom learning could be translated into practical community engagement.
”Development communication is most impactful when it moves beyond the classroom to address real societal challenges. Through this campaign, our students are not merely studying behaviour change communication; they are applying its principles to educate, mobilise and inspire positive action within their immediate environment. This is the essence of experiential learning, where knowledge is translated into practical solutions that improve lives.”
He explained that the awareness walk marked the first phase of the campaign, which will culminate in a public lecture bringing together commercial tricycle operators, road safety stakeholders, and members of the university community to discuss practical strategies for improving transportation safety on campus.
One of the participating commercial tricycle operators described the initiative as timely and impactful.
”Sometimes we become so occupied with work that we overlook simple safety practices. This campaign has reminded us of the importance of avoiding overloading, obeying traffic rules and putting passengers’ safety first. We appreciate the students for taking the time to educate us.”
Beyond fulfilling an academic requirement, the campaign provided students with an opportunity to apply the principles of development communication through a real-life behaviour change initiative. It also demonstrated how strategic communication can influence attitudes, promote responsible conduct, and strengthen collaboration between the university and key stakeholders.
Members of the university community commended the students for adopting an innovative, participatory approach to learning, describing the initiative as a practical demonstration of the role of communication in advancing public education and sustainable development.
The organizers expressed optimism that the “Safe Ride, Safe Life” Campaign would deepen road safety consciousness among commercial tricycle operators and commuters, while fostering a safer transportation culture within and around the University of Abuja. The campaign will conclude with a public lecture expected to equip participants with practical safety knowledge and expert guidance on responsible road use.
